What is Spyware?
Spyware
is ANY SOFTWARE, which employs a user's Internet
connection in the background (the so-called
"backchannel") without his/her knowledge
or explicit permission.
Silent background use of
an Internet "backchannel" connection
MUST BE PRECEDED by a complete and truthful
disclosure of proposed backchannel usage, followed
by the receipt of explicit, informed, consent
for such use.
ANY SOFTWARE communicating across the Internet absence of these elements is guilty of information theft and is properly and rightfully termed as Spyware.
Another potential problem
is that many of them are poorly written, "contains
bugs or errors", and can cause problems
with the normal operation of your computer.
If your web-browser experiences "General
Protection Faults", hangs, or
freezes it may be due to one or more of these
types of programs interfering with its proper
function.
Nowadays lots of programs
come in to our computers as unwanted visitors.
Especially if you are a hefty Internet user.
But its very irritating to know that there are
programs which use your computer without your
permission or knowledge, and try to accumulate
our private information and use our own computer
resources to relay it to someone else. Spyware
does that only.
Spywares
come in the Trojan horse category
of viruses. Spywares are distributed mainly
through the Internet, via freeware downloads
or through underground hacker sites. Spywares
are also sometimes bundled along with some commercial
software, as a means to track the usage of the
software and collect data regarding the user.
Spyware, Who uses it?
All of us have access to
a spyware. The Internet is
the biggest arsenal for spyware
programs. Even though anybody can get a spyware
program by installing a shareware
or freeware program, mostly
Internet users fall victim to these spywares.
Marketing companies use
Spywares to collect data from
your computer . This may include the URLs you
visit, the products that you buy through internet
and the emails that you send. Spywares
track all these details and send it back to
the company.
Your friends, your parents,
your spouse or anybody use Spywares
to monitor your online activities.
Companies also use Spywares to monitor your activities while at work.
Hacking and cracking groups can use Spywares
to monitor your activities and get your passwords.
Underground mafias can use Spywares
to get your credit card number, bank account
information, passwords etc.

can broadly be defined as any program that is
